How to create a personality test with Questionnaire activity
An example of a personality test result page within the Questionnaire activity
Overview:
This guide will show you how to create a personality test using the Questionnaire activity. The "personality test" feature enables a questionnaire creator to attribute different "values" to the answers to certain types of questions. Those values can be added into scores - globally or in several "sections" - and relevant feedback messages based on those scores can be displayed to the respondent.
What to know:
The personality test is an advanced use of the Questionnaire activity, therefore, it takes some effort to set it up. The following question types can be used with the "personality test" feature: Radio buttons, Dropdown Box, Rate, and Yes/No. In order for the answers to those questions to be "scored", they must have a question name, must be required and each of their choices must have a value. For the Yes/No question, the default values are 1 for a Yes answer and 0 for a No. There are three kinds of reports to be displayed in your personality test: bipolar bars, horizontal bars, and Rose.

Step 1: Create the questions
The following question types can be used with the "personality test" feature: Radio buttons, Dropdown Box, Rate, and Yes/No. In order for the answers to those questions to be "scored", they must have a question name, must be required and each of their choices must have a value. For the Yes/No question, the default values are 1 for a Yes answer and 0 for a No. Please refer to this guide for instructions on creating the questions.
Step 2: Configure the "feedback" options
Now that your questionnaire contains a number of questions, the Feedback options section is available.
In the Feedback options dropdown box, select "Feedback sections".
Select "Yes" in "Display Scores".
Choose the "chart" type that you prefer.
You may use the "Feedback notes field" to enter text which will be displayed to your respondents at the end of their "Feedback report", e.g. external link to more information on the topic, etc.
After configuring these settings, click the "Save settings and edit Feedback Sections" button.
Step 3: Editing Questionnaire Feedback Sections
When you get to this section page for the first time, an empty [New section] is available. You should re-name it by entering an appropriate label under the "[New section] section heading".
If you are going to use the bipolar Chart type for this questionnaire, rather than labelling the first section "Sports", you might label it with a "bipolar" label: "Sporty|Not Sporty" After this, you can enter a heading to use for this section. You can use the heading text to display the specific score for the current section, using the $scorepercent label, for example, "Your 'sports attitude' score is $scorepercent". The report will be displayed something like below:
Step 4: Add questions into your section
Below the "Feedback sections" Label and Heading fields is the section questions management. Here you can add, delete and assign weights to the questions for this section. You add a question by selecting it from the drop-down and clicking "Add question...". You delete a question by clicking the 'x' next to it. You assign a weight by choosing a value from the numeric selector next to the question.
Step 5: Set the messages for the various boundaries in each section
Below the questions, you can manage the messages for the various boundaries in each section.
Below is an example:
- Feedback Score boundary
- 100%
- Feedback: You must be very fit. Congratulations!
- Feedback Score boundary
- 66%
- Feedback: Your physical activity is only average. Come on!
- Feedback Score boundary
- 33%
- Feedback: You seem to be a real couch potato. Make an effort!
When finished, click the Save changes button.
Step 6: Add another section
To add another section, enter the name in the "Label" field and click "Add new section". Then you can set up the section by following the steps above. You can edit the sections by selecting the section and click "Go to feedback section".
