Bulk upload student submissions on the Turnitin Official Website for similarity check (for Teachers)

This guide will show you how to check similarity reports on the Turnitin official website as an alternative approach to checking reports on the Learning Mall. If you already have an account for the Turnitin website, please go straight to Step 1-6: Log in to the system.



1. Turnitin official website is only used for checking Turnitin similarity reports. Turnitin官网页面仅用于Turnitin查重。

2. The files submitted to the Turnitin official website will not be synchronized to the Learning Mall. 在Turnitin官网页面提交的文件不会同步在Learning Mall系统。

3. Please still mark the submissions on Learning Mall module page. 请在Learning Mall课程页面打分。



Step 1: Access the Turnitin official website

Please access the Turnitin official website:  https://www.turnitin.com/  

Then click 'Login' at the top right corner.


Step 2: Reset password (Skip if you have changed the password)

If you are the first time logging into the page, please click 'Forgot your password? Click here' link.

If not, please jump to Step tp log in.


Please type in your XJTLU email and your Surname, then click 'Next' button.

Hint: please use your XJTLU email and Surname . Otherwise, you cannot use the Turnitin service.


Then you will get an email in your XJTLU email box (the mailbox you just typed in in Step 3).

The email title is ' Reset your Turnitin password '. Please click the link in the email to reset the password.

Hint: This password is only used for Turnitin website login. It is not connected with the Learning Mall user account.


Please type in your new password, confirm the password and click 'Next' button.


Step 3: Log in to the system

Then you can log in with your XJTLU email and new password .



Step 4: Change to 'Instructor' role

After logging in to the Turnitin website, you will be able to see the Turnitin homepage.  Please make sure you are in the 'Instructor' role at the top of the page, as highlighted.

If not, please click the 'Instructor' role and choose the 'Instructor' role in the dropdown list.



Step 5: Select the module / Create a new module

Select the module that you need to check the Turnitin rates and reports, as shown below.

Please make sure you are in the 'instructor' role, when you select the module.

(If you cannot find the module that you need to view the Turnitin rates and reports, please go to Step 7 - create a new module.)


Step 6: View Turnitin reports / bulk uplaod submissions for Turnitin check

If the student submissions have already got the Turnitin report and you request is to view the Turnitin reports, you can click into your module in Turnitin official website and view the reports, as shown below.

But if the student submissions do not have the Turnitin reports, you can jump to Step 8, in order to bulk upload the submissions as a teaher for a Turnitin Check.


Then, please click into the assignment, to view the Turnitin rates and reports.


Then, you can see the Turnitin rate and reports. (That's the end of the guide you need.)

If you still have some student submissions without Turnitin rates and reports, you can also follow Steps 8-11 to bulk upload student submissions for a Turnitin check.


Step 7: Add a new module

Add a new module by clicking on 'Add class'.


Complete the module information. It is suggest to NOT use exactly the same name as your module name on Learning Mall. Then a new module is created.

Then, please follow the steps below to add an assignment and bulk upload submissions for Turnitin check.


Step 8: Add a new assignment 

Add a new assignment by clicking on 'Add assignment'.


Click on 'Next Step'.


Type in the Assignment title and set the due date. 

  1. Give a title of the assignment
  2. Click ''allow any file type" if there are more than one file types, e.g. both PDF and Word Documents are submitted
  3. We recommend setting the due date to the end of the month in case the Turnitin issue is still not fixed by then
  4. Click 'Optional settings' for Turnitin settings
    1. Please change the 'submit paper to' setting to 'institution paper repository'
  5. Click 'Submit' button



Step 9: Download Assignments on Learning Mall

Please go to the assignment activity in Learning Mall and click 'View all submissions'.



Please click 'Download all submissions' in 'Grading Action' dropdown menu. Then all submissions will be downloaded.


Select the files you would like to check and compress them into a Zip file. For Mac, you can select the files and click 'Compress‘. For windows, you can use a Zip tool to create the zip file. 

Please note, you need to zip the files directly, NOT the folder. The system cannot identify any zipped folder. If your files are in folders (e.g. from a direct download from the Learning Mall), you can locate and select the PDF or Word files by searching .PDF or .doc/.docx in the folder. 


Step 10: Bulk submit files on Turnitin official website

Locate the assignment, go to 'More actions', and then click on 'Submit'. 


Change the submission method from ‘Single File Upload’ to 'Zip File Upload' in the dropdown menu.

Hint: If you cannot click the to change the upload method, please wait a while for the webpage to be completely loaded.


Please choose your submission by clicking ‘Choose File’ button. Then select the zip file in your computer.



Click ‘Submit’ button to confirm the submission. Please make sure the files are ticked to be selected.



Click ‘Submit’ button to confirm the submission.


Step 11: Check the Turnitin rate

Then you will be able to see your submissions within the assignment. You need to wait a while for the similarity reports.


You can also click into the Turnitin similarity rates to view the reports.
